UAW LOCAL 1050 UPDATE
5/7/14
Brothers and Sisters,
Your Bargaining Committee would like to communicate to the membership
about the state of the business in Wheels. For some time now, the wheels
business has been booming when it comes to volume. Apparently, the volume that
our customers are requesting is to the point that every opportunity for our
plant to produce more CVW Wheels is a reality. As we have communicated recently,
the company called for a Bargaining Committee Meeting along with our
International Union to present us with the issue of leaving potentially more
business to our competitors because of capacity. The company proposed an
alternative work schedule in order to keep up with the demand by essentially
operating the presses and furnaces every day.
The Bargaining Committee countered the Alternative Work Schedule
presented to the Union with the “contractual” alternative of offering voluntary
overtime across the lot for any and all members that are interested in training,
committing and working our voluntary weekends in order to keep the Wheels
Business able to meet the current demand. It is our obligation to keep work in
house and assist in not allowing our competitors to gain market share at our
expense called job security. This is a great problem to have and for the first
time since most of us have been employed by Alcoa, we have both Businesses
(Aerospace & Wheels) Booming!
This letter is only to communicate in advance of the company seeking
volunteer’s throughout the facility that would like to earn a little more money
after some training to work either in H-Plant Press Room and S-Plant Heat Treat
on voluntary weekends. We are looking at trying to fill as many weekends (26)
that would be scheduled as voluntary.
As of next Monday, the company will be hiring 25 more new hires as
Production Trainee’s with the potential of hiring another 20 or so in June. We
wanted to let you all know that the opportunity for making more money on
voluntary weekends exists and contractually under the Wheel Plant and Forge
Plant Overtime Agreements both give classified employees the first opportunity
to work the overtime then the department, followed by the rest of the plant.
As a summary, we would like to reiterate that this process will only be
following the contract as it refers to the Overtime Agreements.
We would like to encourage all who are interested in making a little more
money on voluntary weekends to participate as we would like to show the company
that following the contract to resolve a business concern is the only and best
way to resolve it!
In Solidarity,
UAW Local 1050
