Union Agenda Meeting

August Safety Committee meeting – August 11, 2015

-          Signing up for possible informational picket demonstration. Who can or can’t participate; why this is important from a safety perspective.

-          113 C&T have bad benches – Repairs were to be made, but the supervisor (Bruce West) stop repairs when production break time was over. Told an employee to continue working on that broken bench.

-          In A Plant, hoist electrical stickers were removed by an electrician as instructed through engineering. Later it was found that engineering erred; new stickers were put back on.

-          Gloves in 113 C&T – incorrect gloves have been ordered, which are either slippery or are the wrong size.

-          113 C&T – Supervisor is pushing to hurry up on jobs. He is willing to take shortcuts or for the employee to take short cuts. If work isn’t rushed, then retaliation tends to arise. Spencer McFern to address this with Harry Samuels, before talking to management above the supervisor.

-          Bad trays across the lot. The demand is high for specific trays for those areas. Repairs can’t keep up with the demand. Some trays are suppose to be sent out for a contractor to work on, but production ends up taking those trays that have been set aside.

-          All Pro Truck drivers have been entering buildings without proper PPE; some even arguing with Alcoa employees about it. It was suggested to call up the guard shack.

-          Auto Etch drain grating – Needs to be replaced or repaired. It is corroded, and the base frame might be deteriorating at the foundation.

-          #11 Die heater near the 15K Press – Foot traffic is a problem when the die car is being loaded or unloaded. This is a narrow area, near the press break room. Possible signage as a reminder for those in proximity to stay away when the car is being loaded or unloaded.

-          Leaking steam lines in A plant – specifically near C&T, final, and sonic. Sonic east tank has a leaking steam valve, where a bucket of hot water is taken away often, so employees are not at risk of steam water splashing on them.

-          The floors at or around the 35K and 50K presses are in need of repair. One section needs a metal plate realigned.

-          A Plant dust collectors – the differential pressure system is ineffective, needs a lot of work.

-          Torch pit bag house in A Plant – a question of emissions; safe?  Recently about 10 bags were replaced. It helped for the time being but there are over 100 bags in that unit.

-          2503 mechanical press in bldg 101 – Not cycling properly; over shooting the stop, as in running a cycle and a half.

-          Foot traffic in bldg 104A – employees (mostly salary) are taking short cuts east to west either through the middle of the floor, or the south end, not using the designated walkway at the north end of the die storage. This is a big distraction for the employees working in this area, moving dies with the crane.

-          A discussion about relocating the cross walk in drive 5, partly because of truck traffic. Possible location across from the dispensary doors.

-          Reviewed a recent IFE about the 8001 press Man Mate – A broken part on the man Mate arm resulted in the arm entering a part of the trim press, putting the trim press operator at risk.

-          The use and rules of red barrier tape was discussed. Who can cross it and who can remove it. The purchase of ERT tape was discussed.

-          Printed green and yellow tags can be printed on location. Colored paper would be needed.

-          Working inside of the Man Mate and Clansman envelope was discussed. A question of how this could be done for hot inspectors, if the gate is down. A question of what and when is this safe. 15K Press gate system is not working at this time.

-          Trays and pallets used near or at the wheel lines. Supervisors are insisting on using broken trays, since there is a shortage of them, even if maint. has to free them up, when they get stuck on various parts of the conveyor system. This is creating a higher risk.

-          Order about 10 new ERT radios.

-          Radios are needed at the Auto Etch and 107 Straightening. Michelle Metajka is updating the radio list.
