Anthem
Insurance Security Breach
Anthem, Inc.—one of the nation’s largest insurance companies—was
recently the target of a sophisticated cyber-attack. Anthem is a part of the
Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, which also includes Alcoa’s health care
claims administrator, Highmark. At this point, we do not know if any Alcoa
employee, retiree or dependent information has been compromised.
What information was compromised?
The cyber-attackers gained unauthorized access to Anthem’s IT system and
obtained personal information on current and former members including names,
birthdays, medical ID numbers, social security numbers, street and email
addresses, and other employment information. According to Anthem, based on what
is known, there is no evidence that credit card or medical information, such as
claims, test results or diagnostic codes, were targeted or compromised.
What is Highmark doing?
Due to the volume of information this breach involves, the names of
potentially affected individuals are not yet known. Highmark is in close contact
with Anthem to gain additional insight about this issue and learn how it might
impact its members. As soon as Anthem provides Highmark with this information,
Highmark will coordinate efforts with Anthem to notify Highmark members, as
necessary.
Where can I find information?
Anthem has established a website (http://www.anthemfacts.com/) for more
information including a Frequently Asked Questions section
(http://www.anthemfacts.com/faq).
The Federal Trade Commission provides tips
for dealing with identity theft and securing your personal information at
http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft or call 1-877-ID-THEFT (877-438-4338).
